Dancehall musician and reality TV star Vybz Kartel has reportedly broken out of a Jamaican prison after holding an officer at gunpoint.

MTV claim that Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, took over the Horizon Adult Remand Centre after he and several other prisoner started a riot. They are said to have escaped this morning (November 30) in a prison maintenance pickup truck after they took clothes and keys from prison guards.

One officer is thought to have died during the breakout with 12 others injured. The Force Commissioner of Jamaica's Criminal Investigations Branch confirmed that the musician was on the run and was on the island's most wanted list along with the other prison escapees.

35-year-old Palmer was being held on murder charges. He was accused of conspiring with three others to kill 27-year-old promoter Barrington Burton, and was charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

The singer has been in trouble before. His feud with another Jamaican singer, Mavado, is blamed for enflaming gang violence in Kingston, and he has previously been arrested for assault and illegal gun possession, although both charges were dropped.
