Country singer Mindy McCready's five-year old son has been taken into custody by officials in Arkansas.

The singer disappeared with her son Zander in the early part of last week and a missing person's report had initially been issued to find the child. McCready then revealed he was with her in Tennessee and that she could not return him as she is heavily pregnant with twins.

However, according to the Associated Press, McCready and her son were found on Friday night (December 2) at an unoccupied house in Arkansas after police were tipped off that they had been sighted in the area.

Officers then entered the house and found the two hiding in a bedroom closet. The child was then taken from the singer and has now been returned to the care of McCready's mother, who is the child's legal guardian, in Florida.

Police in Arkansas have not said whether the singer will be charged with trespass for being inside the unoccupied home.

McCready has a history of drug abuse, appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr Drew last year and, later in the same year, was hospitalised after a suspected drugs overdose.

The singer has been involved in a lengthy custody battle with her mother over her son, with her mother awarded custody and made a full guardian of the child in 2007. She has attempt to overturn this a number of times since and is also suing her mother and a tabloid newspaper for libel in a Palm Beach County court.
