Brighton's Rounder Records to close its doors after 46 years

Stone Roses biographer John Robb and Rough Trade are among those sad to see independent Brighton store go

Independent store Rounder Records is to close its doors after 46 years.

The Brighton based store announced the shutdown this morning (July 9) and blamed the closure on the rise of downloads and the recession.

Announcing the news via Twitter a statement read:

It is with huge regret and sadness that we have to announce that we are closing down. We will shut our doors at 6pm on Sunday 29 July after 46 years of being a record shop in Brighton Square.

It explained further: "We are a business that has been decimated by downloads (both legal and illegal), VAT avoidance by the big online retailers, a double dip recession and the decline of the high street. Our lease has ended and we have nowhere to go."

Many fans of the store took also took to the social networking site to express their sadness over the closure.

The Stone Roses biographer John Robb wrote: "Brighton's Rounder Records to close - another sad day for independent music."

Independent label Rough Trade also voiced their disappointment adding: "Very sad to hear that Rounder Records are to close in Brighton."

The store will continue to sell records at a cut price until it officially closes on July 29.
