The music featured in the 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies has seen a huge increase in sales worth £2.2m.

According to figures from music industry body BPI, there were nearly 250,000 extra album sales and just under 500,000 additional music track downloads following the events, the BBC reports.

Almost a quarter of the tracks in the top 100 singles chart in the week after the closing ceremony on 12 August were songs performed at the event, including three in the top 10.

Meanwhile, 24 of the Top 100 albums chart were by artists who performed or had songs included in the event.

Emeli Sande saw such a boost that she even managed to overtake Adele as the best seller of this year so far. Her track 'Read All About It Part 3' had sold 449 copies in the week leading up to the closing ceremony, but this surged to 45,000 copies in the following week.

There were also steep increases in sales for Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' and The Who's 'See Me Feel Me', as well as Frank Turner's 'I Still Believe' and Chemical Brothers' 'Galvanize'.
