Public memorial for Ravi Shankar to take place in San Diego today (Dec 20)
Fans are invited to take part in spoken-word tributes and prayers
A public memorial service in tribute to the late Ravi Shankar will take place in San Diego this morning (December 20).
The memorial is a chance for fans to pay respect to the iconic sitar player, famous for his relationship with The Beatles as well as his own material, who died earlier this month, aged 92. Fans wishing to show their respects are invited to the Self-Realization Fellowship on the corner of Highway 101 & K Street in Encinitas, San Diego from 10.30am local time.
"For those who have some personal relationship with Ravi Shankar and his music, this will be an opportunity to say farewell," an associate of the musician's friends and family told U-T San Diego. "He was a man of the public, and the public should be able to pay their respects."
Shankar famously taught The Beatles' George Harrison how to play the sitar and was instrumental in bringing Indian music to the West. Harrison once described him as the "godfather of world music". Shankar died in the early evening of December 11 in San Diego, California.
It has also been confirmed that Shankar will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys next year.
