Nick Grimshaw's BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show gains 250,000 young listeners
Overall the station lost 500,000 listeners in the last quarter of 2011
The presenter, who took over the early morning slot last September, lost 40,000 listeners overall but increased the number of 15-24 year olds tuning into his show by a quarter of a million. Figures show Grimmy pulled in 6.69 million listeners in the three months up to December 16 - down from 6.73 million in the previous quarter and a seven-year low for the station overall.
Overall the station's weekly figures of 11.1 million listeners is 500,000 listeners down from the 11.7 million tuning in during the final quarter of 2011. Despite the figures, BBC Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper said they "exceeded [his] expectation" for a brand new breakfast show.
He told BBC News:
This has been the biggest schedule change in a generation, which has resulted in the station's audience getting younger.
Meanwhile, Chris Evans' Breakfast Show helped Radio 2 boost its weekly audience to 15.1 million. The station added 1.2 million listeners between October and December and 842,000 on the same period in 2011 - a 5.9 per cent increase. BBC 6 Music, was another big winner in the latest listening figures, increasing its average weekly audience by nearly a third year-on-year to 1.9 million.
