US country singer Mindy McCready has died of an apparent suicide aged 37, reports BBC news.

Police deputies were sent to a home in Heber Springs, Arizona at around 4 pm yesterday (February 17) and found McCready's body on the front porch. She was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is pending. Arkansas sheriff Marty Moss said suffered an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound".

McCready topped America's country charts with 1996's 'Guys Do It All the Time', and her 'Ten Thousand Angels' LP sold two million copies. Her fifth and last album, 'I'm Still Here', was released in 2010. However, the singer's career was soon interrupted by personal issues, including a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons.

Known to have problems with prescription drugs and alcohol, McCready had been arrested several times on drug charges. In 2004, she was charged with obtaining the painkiller OxyContin fraudulently at a pharmacy, and was placed on three years' probation after pleading guilty. Arrested for DUI in May 2005, she attempted suicide the following July and again in December 2008.

McCready's relationships were much-scrutinised too – in 2008 it was revealed she had a long-term relationship with baseball player Roger Clemens, who she had met when she was 15 and he was 28.

McCready's death comes weeks after the death of record producer David Wilson, her boyfriend and father to one of her two sons, whose death is being investigated. Her two boys, aged six months and nine months, were subsequently removed from her home. Speaking to NBC's Dateline about her partner's death in January, McCready said she had "never gone through anything this painful".
