An old Ivor Novello award has been found in a metal scrapyard in Croydon, South London.

The bronze songwriting gong was uncovered during a police operation to combat metal theft and appears to have gone missing about 16 years ago, the BBC London reports. However, it was never reported stolen at the time.

Vick Bain, executive director of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), the organisation that runs the annual awards, told BBC London that the discarded statuette was simply a demonstration model and never due to be handed out to an artist.

The statuette appears to been misplaced when BASCA moved offices in 1997 and Bain added: "We will definitely keep a greater amount of security on it. It will be great to have it back."

The Ivor Novello Awards are held each May and have been recognising Britain's songwriting and composing talents since 1955. This year's event brought awards for Noel Gallagher, Alt-J and The Maccabees and other winners over recent years include Adele, Muse, Dizzee Rascal and Plan B.
