BBC Radio 1 is to have its own channel on BBC iPlayer, it has been revealed.

The channel will allow viewers to watch exclusive content not broadcast on radio or TV as well as video content around the station's existing interviews and performances. Footage from events such as Radio 1's Live Lounge and the annual Big Weekend festival will feature on the channel as well as interviews, such as Zane Lowe's recent chat with Kanye West.

Ben Cooper, Controller of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, says the channel will help the station get its content to more young people than ever before. "I'm very excited about transforming Radio 1 from being just a radio station into being a full audio-visual channel," he told BBC Newsbeat. "Radio 1 has always pioneered innovative ideas and led the way in engaging with young people. This is another huge step in cementing that reputation."

Kanye West's headline grabbing interview with Zane Lowe has been watched over three million times on YouTube while Bastille's Live Lounge performance has close to two million views. Outside of music, a spoof version of Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' featuring a naked Greg James also proved a huge viral success. There is currently no date as to when the iPlayer channel will launch.
