Turntable.fm to shut down

The site's owners want to focus on a new venture called Turntable Live

Turntable.fm to shut down
Turntable.fm is set to close.

The website, a Stateside virtual DJ community for music sharing, will be closing so that the site's founders can focus on a new project, called Turntable Live. Turntable Live will stream concerts, for "an incredible interactive live experience" they state at Turntable.com. The site will see bands playing shows in the Turntable studio in New York, with fans buying tickets for the virtual gig. "If enough tickets are sold, the artist will play the event," say Turntable. They add that the site will enable users to "experience a live performance, ask the artist questions, send photos, and interact with a huge online crowd." They have already hosted 11 events on the new site.

Writing about the closure of Turntable.fm on the site's blog - via Pitchfork - they said: "As much as we all love turntable.fm, we have decided to shut it down to fully concentrate on the Live experience. It was a tough decision to make because we love this community so much, but the cost of running a music service has been too expensive and we can’t outpace it with our efforts to monetize it and cut costs. If we also want to give Turntable Live a real shot, we need to fully focus on it." They add: "Thanks for all the amazing times, songs played, conversations had, and people we met together!"

Turntable.fm was launched in May 2011.
