'Jesus Christ Superstar' production starring John Lydon cancelled due to poor ticket sales
Promoter states that some venues on US tour failed to sell half the necessary tickets
As reported, Lydon was to appear as King Herod in the touring production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical, alongside Incubus' Brandon Boyd - pictured - as Judas and Destiny Child's Michelle Williams as Mary. 'N Sync's JC Chasez was to play Pontius Pilate. The 50-date tour was due to start on June 9 in New Orleans, but was cancelled this weekend (May 30).
No reason was given at the time of cancellation but promoter Michael Cohl has since confirmed to The New York Times that poor ticket sales were behind the decision, with many of the dates selling just half of the tickets needed for the production to make a profit.
"It became obvious the shows were in trouble, but we tried until the last moment to give it every chance to turn around," Cohl said. "In the end it just did not make business sense to continue, and we didn’t want the cast to endure playing to disappointing audiences."
All purchased tickets will be refunded.
