BBC 6 Music overtakes Radio 3 for first time as 1Xtra falls below a million listeners
BBC 6 Music has overtaken Radio 3 in official listening figures for the first time.

RAJAR figures released today (July 31) confirm that the digital station, which was saved from being scrapped in 2010, attracted 1.89 million listeners on average, while BBC Radio 3, which can be found on FM radios as well as on digital, has 1.8 million.

BBC 6 Music's figures for the second quarter of 2014 represent a 5.5 per cent increase on the same period in 2013, but are actually down 1.9 per cent from the first three months of 2014.

Elsewhere, BBC 1Xtra lost 15.9 per cent of listeners in the last year with the stations listening figures dropping below a million for the first time. The urban music station was recently embroiled in controversy when they voted Ed Sheeran top of their UK 'Power List'.

There were positives for the BBC, however, with Radio 2 breakfast show host Chris Evans (main picture) pulling in a record number of listeners, while Nick Grimshaw's (pictured right) Radio 1 listening figures have also increased. Grimshaw's numbers increased 1.4 per cent year on year to an average of 5.97 million.

More generally, Radio 1 increased its weekly reach by 2.5 per cent in the last quarter, while Radio 2's fell by 0.5 per cent, with 15.49 million people tuning in to the station every week.
