Today’s new releases: The Prodigy, Death Cab For Cutie, Sufjan Stevens and more

Plus new albums from Lower Dens, Death Grips, The Go! Team, Circa Waves and Only Real

The Prodigy, Sufjan Stevens and Death Cab For Cutie lead this week’s new releases.

‘The Day Is My Enemy’ is the first album released by The Prodigy for six years, following on from 2009’s ‘Invaders Must Die’. The band’s sixth album to date, it also features contributions from Sleaford Mods.

Th album marks the 25th anniversary of the band, but Liam Howlett recently said of their future: “I’m always suspicious of bands who last too long. But the music proves whether you’re ready to let it go or not. When people hear this album they’ll hear it’s still got energy in it. This band keeps us young.”

Sufjan Stevens, meanwhile, is back with ‘Carrie & Lowell’, written about his step father and late mother. The album is the follow up to Stevens’ last studio album ‘The Age Of Adz’, released in 2010. Prior to that album Stevens embarked on an ambitious plan to write and release an album representing each of the 50 US states. At present the mission has birthed two albums (‘Michigan’ and ‘Illinois’).

‘Meanwhile, Death Cab For Cutie release ‘Kintsugi’, their first album since guitarist Chris Walla left the band.

Commenting on the album, frontman Ben Gibbard has said that he hopes the band’s past will not affect fans’ enjoyment of their new music. “I completely respect and understand why people love ‘Transatlanticism’ or ‘We Have The Facts…’ or ‘Narrow Stairs’,” said Gibbard, “and I would hope that as we move forward, people listen with as little prejudice as they can and try to hear the music for what it is and not what they want it to be.”

Walla played his last live show in September 2014 before leaving the group after 15 years. ‘Kintsugi’ features some of his work completed before the departure.

Today also sees the release of new records from Lower Dens, Death Grips, The Go! Team, Fort Romeau and Godspeed You! Black Emperor while Circa Waves and Only Real their debut albums.
