The final day of Governors Ball festival in New York has been cancelled due to severe weather.

The three-day event, which takes place on Randall's Island, had seen large amounts of rain on its second day yesterday (June 4). Weather forecasts for today predict lightning and thunderstorms in the area are highly likely.

In an official statement on the festival website, organisers wrote: "Sunday, June 5th of Gov Ball 2016 has officially been cancelled, due to severe weather and a high likelihood of lightning in the area. The safety of fans, artists and crew always comes first."

Kanye West was due to headline the main stage tonight, while acts such as Two Door Cinema Club, Chvrches, Bat For Lashes and Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill supergroup Prophets Of Rage were also scheduled to perform.

Organisers have confirmed that fans who purchased a Sunday ticket or transportation tickets through the Governors Ball website will have their money refunded directly into their account within 21 days. Those who purchased three-day tickets will be given a partial refund for the Sunday portion of their tickets.
