Warpaint reveal rap and R&B influence on new album

Warpaint have revealed that their new album is inspired by rap and R&B, describing the sound as "definitely different".

The US band will release 'Warpaint' – the follow up to 2010 album 'The Fool' – on January 20, 2014 through Rough Trade. 'Love Is To Die', the first song to be taken from the album, can be streamed below. The album is self-produced along with producer Flood (PJ Harvey, Sigur Ros), and mixed by Flood and Nigel Godrich (Radiohead).

Speaking to NME in a new interview in this week's issue, available digitally and on newsstands now, lead singer Emily Kokal says: "It's more than classic guitars. We're into rap and R&B things that have drum machines and ambience, music that's more than standard rock." She adds: "I only play guitar on maybe two songs – everything else is keys so it's definitely different."

Meanwhile, bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg admits that working with producer Flood was an "awkward" experience for the band. "I was excited to see what we would do on our own, so when we decided to have a producer I was apprehensive because I didn't want to follow someone else's vision. At first it was a little bit awkward, but if there was something that we didn't agree with and we stuck by it, he would back down."

Warpaint play the last in a run of four UK shows in London tonight (October 30). New tourdates for 2014 have also been announced, with the band set to return to Britain in January for gigs in Brighton, Oxford, Leeds, Liverpool and Bristol.
