We Are Scientists spent last night’s election results in Barack Obama’s hometown of Chicago, making the journey on a day off from their current US tour with Kings Of Leon.

Speaking to NME.COM, singer Keith Murray said the band had initially intended to drive all day and watch the results with Kings Of Leon, but at the last minute decided to make the trip to Chicago.

"There was some discussion about actually trying to make it to the Obama rally in Grant Park," Murray wrote, "but we concluded that making it to the site at that late hour would be an absolute nightmare, especially in a van with a trailer. Anyway, I think we've all spent more than enough time this year standing in fields amidst huge crowds of heatedly enthusiastic people."

The band instead holed themselves up in a hotel close to O'Hare Airport to watch the results flood in, but even with such positive projections so early on in the evening for Obama, Murray says the band was still stunned at the win.

"Despite the clear lead that Obama had enjoyed throughout the evening, it was still pretty stunning to actually hear Obama's victory declared - you've got to remember how truly burned we Democrats had been in the past two elections - I think the overall sense was one of stunned relief, like a sudden parole granted after a long (like, eight-years-long) imprisonment," he explained.

The singer also revealed that the moment of victory was an emotional one: "Unfortunately, by the time Obama had finished with his speech - there were a lot of dudes in the room pretending not to be choked up, I'll tell you that much - the hotel bar was closed, and, with it, the possibility of flaming celebratory beverages.

"Instead, we made do with what was in the mini bar. I think Chris [Cain] summed it up best when, slurping from his tiny bottle of Chivas Regal, he declared, "it's like Christmas for adults!"

We Are Scientists' tour with Kings Of Leon continues tonight in Milwaukee, WI.
