Wyclef Jean asks Haiti citizens to give up crime
The rapper/producer makes plea on Haitian radio
Wyclef Jean has made a plea on various Haitian radio stations asking residents of the country to give up crime.
Jean, who was born in the Caribbean country in 1972, asked citizens to refrain from raping and kidnapping.
Crime is rife in Haiti, with BBC News reporting that 36 people were abducted in the capital city, Port-au-Prince, in March this year.
Jean's statements, which were aired in creole via various local radio stations in Haiti, were backed up by the UN.
"If you love Wyclef that means you love Haiti," he said. "So you should not be raping women, kidnapping people and children. There can be no excuse for doing so. I reject these evil practices."
Jean runs a charity called the Yele Haiti Foundation, which provides humanitarian aid and assistance.
