Wyclef Jean is to appeal against his ineligibility in the presidential race in Haiti.

On Friday (August 20), The Fugees man learned he would not be able to stand as a presidential candidate as he has not lived in the country for five years prior to an election.

However, BBC News reports that Jean, who was born in Haiti but brought up in the USA, is now to contest the ruling, arguing that his role as a roving ambassador for the Caribbean state exempts him from the residency rule.

On his Twitter account, twitter.com/wyclef, Jean wrote today: "Tomorrow our lawyers are appealing the decision of the CEP. We have met all the requirements set by the laws. And the law must be respected."
