Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O has spoken about her Oscar nomination for the first time.

The singer received a nod from the Academy Awards earlier this week for her song 'The Moon Song', which she wrote for Spike Jonze's 'Her'. She is joined on the list of nominees for this year's Oscars by fellow musical acts U2 and Pharrell Williams.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about the nomination, Karen O said: "Holy smokes. I had zero clue! To say this was unexpected is an understatement."

She added: "It's wild because 'The Moon Song' was written and recorded in the most humble of circumstances; at my dining room table, a few paces away from the couch I read the script for 'Her' for the first time."

The song isn't the first time she has written a song for a film of Jonze's. In 2009, she wrote the score for his adaptation of 'Where The Wild Things Are'. Of her relationship with Jonze, she said: "The song was 10 years in the making according to Spike and testament to a beautiful friendship and creative chemistry we've shared over the years. I hope everyone and their sister, mother, father and uncle goes out to see Spike's inspired heartfelt film. And thanks Spike for making my very real phobia of ever having to be in a position to give an acceptance speech at a major award show a reality."

She also went on to say she'd celebrated her nomination by calling Jonze, then her parents and then listened to Nina Simone's cover of 'I Shall Be Released' and sang along. "It's such a soulful uplifting rendition and always makes me feel so good," she said.

The Academy Awards take place on March 1.
