Michael Giacchino, composer of considerable talent takes on the new Star Trek film which is a reboot for the franchise. It's not abandoning the previous stories as the movie is both a sequel and a prequel, and there is enough in the film to probably to confuse anyone. It was almost a forgone conclusion that Giacchino would be given the assignment of scoring the new Star Trek movie as soon as JJ Abrams was announced to be directing a new Trek film. Giacchino has worked on several of Abrams television projects, and on his directorial debut with Mission Impossible. Giacchino has had a busy career as of lately so it's amazing that he actually found time to score this movie, and to be honest I'm a little disappointed by it. I've never been very impressed with Giacchino's work but I never thought he was a bad composer, I just have never been able to get into his work. Maybe it's because it's a Star Trek I expected so much more, something that would truly blow me away, and I didn't get that with this score. As heard here in "Enterprising Young Men" (one of the albums highlights I believe) Giacchino uses his main theme for Star Trek, and it does sound very similar to Alexander Courages' original main theme. It sounds like a mutated form of Courages' theme, and I do like it quite a bit, but it's not quite as memorable as Goldsmiths, Horner's, or even Eidelman's themes.
