KanDe Aceh is a group that combines traditional ethnic and modern elements. It was formed in 2000 and now consists of 12 musicians. The group makes music that is strongly based on the tradition from Aceh, which dominated by percussion and percussion instrumens, such as the rapai, geundeurang, tamboe, rapai pasee, and the seureune kalee. The word "kande" comes from Acehnese and means 'hanging lamp'. It is traditional lamp that uses 9 wick, and it became an important tool to light the environment for the people of Aceh in the times of drakness that they experienced as a result of the prolonged violence that had engulfed their lands. At first the group KanDe also consisted 9 musician, to stay close to the original meaning of the lamp - which was to give light in the times of drakness , But KanDe grew to its present propotions and now includes 12 musicians. When the disastrous tsunami hit Aceh (Dec.2006) one of KanDe's 'wicks', Amir the bass player also became a victim. In the hard times following these events KanDe became a means to give some light and coolness to their audieces, presenting someof the finest music of Islamic syair (traditional sung poetry), Acehnese ballads and other texts/songs expressing the problem they had to face. KanDe's performance gave a bit of freshness and sought to encourage its audiences, sot that Aceh could re-appear as a healtheir, cleaner, safer and more prosperous place, an example to other.
