Lachin with Vismaya Lhi - soprano and Dusan Bogdanovic - guitar video

All of the videos in this series were shot at the historic Presidio Chapel in San Francisco in a single short session. They are essentially real time 'jazz' improvisations based on the harmonic structure, melody, words and feeling of a folk song; they are not intended to be understood as performances based on tradition. Malcolm Cecil was the videographer. Vismaya Lhi and Jaromy Russo were the audio engineers. Lachin is an ancient Azeri city in Karabakh occupied by Armenian armed forces. There is much dispute over who has the right to the city and the surrounding lands. The song is an Azeri folk song rich with longing and lamentation. A friend of mine who knows a great deal about the music from this region (DJ Fari at KUSF San Francisco) introduced me to the song when I was looking for material for this project.
