He married to la grande diseuse Lucienne Boyer in 1939 and they were divorced in 1951. On the 20 Sptember 1952, he married singer Édith Piaf. However, in 1956, this marriage also ended in divorce. His hey days were in 1930s, when he performed and recorded many sides for Columbia and Odeon with Georges Tabet (b. 1905 in Alger, d. 1984) - as Pills et Tabet - a most popular male duett in history of French chanson.
