In 1987, The Cure’s drummer and keyboardist Lol Tolhurst’s alcohol addiction began to interfere with the band’s touring schedule. He was frequently replaced by Psychedelic Furs keyboardist Roger O'Donnell until the rest of the band eventually told Robert Smith that either he went or they did.
