12 greatest albums of 2013 so far

Despite being only a quarter of the way through, 2013 has been awash with some great albums. Here's our list of the best ones so far. Justin Timberlake, 'The 20/20 Experience', as chosen by Priya Elan. "Why? Usurped by Bieber it seemed unlikely that JT would make a quality third album. But The 20/20 Experience was a multi-textured listen which referenced Shuggie Otis and, erm, Gloria Estefan. "

Foals, 'Holy Fire', as chosen by David Renshaw. "'Holy Fire' feels like the album Foals have been building toward since we first got wind of a bunch of math-rock fans who were destroying house parties in Oxford. Bold and mature, it's an album that knows itself and walks with a confident stride but still retains the restless and agitated energy that makes the band's live shows so exciting."

Peace, 'In Love', as chosen by Eve Barlow. "The debut album from B-Town legends, Peace, immediately pulls you in to a Technicolor, psychedelic dreamland. So much so you can hear the echo of John Lennon on 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. 'In Love' triumphs with trippy, singalong tune after trippy, singalong tune, until all the fibres in your body feel 15 again."

Atoms For Peace, 'Amok, chosen by Lucy Jones. "One of the challenges electronic musicians face is tackling the cold, hard nature of technology and making it work with a human vocal. Atoms achieve this by blending man and machine using dystopian bass lines, afrobeats groove and insane time signatures, bound together with Thom Yorke sounding like a ghost in a field of robotic crickets."

Parquet Courts, 'Light Up Gold', as chosen by Matt Wilkinson. "It's only the second album I've ever given by 9/10 in NME and three months later I still stand by it. Any band who can make guitar music sound this essential in 2013 is more than alright in my book."

David Bowie, 'The Next Day', chosen by Dan Stubbs. "Once the initial excitement of Bowie being back had worn off, I did wonder how much I really, honestly cared about a new album. But 'The Next Day' is not just a great new Bowie album, it's a great Bowie album full stop, full of big tunes and lyrics that revel in his own mythology. This is a wise Bowie producing fresh new music. Tour, please."

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, 'Push The Sky Away'. "On their 15th album, Cave and The Seeds bring a lazy, eloquent charm to the proceedings. Tracks like 'Higgis Boson Blues' and 'Jubilee Street' are not just album highlights, but career highlights for Mr Cave."

Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory, 'Elements Of Light', as chosen by Matthew Horton. "For his fourth album, Pantha aka Hendrik Weber gets all clanged up with ensemble The Bell Laboratory. Together Weber and the Laboratory manage to conjure up a dancefloor storm, ambient moments steamrolled by Balearic ding-dong wig-outs. Describe it any way you like as long as you add, 'with bells on'."

The Strokes, 'Comedown Machine'. "They may have faltered on 2011's 'Angles', but the leather jacket wearing quintet are in perfect harmony on their fifth album. Taking the same sonic cues as Julian Casablancas did on his solo debut 'Phrazes For The Young', the band experiment with 80s synth sounds and results are wonderful ('Chances'). The sound of a band reinvigorated."

Merchandise, 'Total Nite', chosen by Jenny Stevens. "What other band can make a record completely saturated in distortion, freaked-out jazz sax solos, industrial clatter and screeching harmonica interludes still sound like a massive pop record? Led by 'modern day Morrissey', Carson Cox, Merchandise's twisted anthems are set to bust these Tampa punks right out of the underbelly that spawned them."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 'Mosquito', as chosen by Sian Rowe. "I'm sorry Karen O. I thought - after thirteen years of Yeah Yeah Yeahs- that Mosquito would end up sounding like a band who were making themselves have fun. I was wrong. They've as much passion as ever. It still makes you want to be Karen, even though she's wearing a yellow suit that looks like it's made of out rubber gloves. "

A$AP Rocky, 'Long. Live. A$AP', chosen by Tom Howard. "'Long. Live. A$AP' is in many ways a flawed album but when it's good it's amazing. Songs like 'Goldie' and '1 Train' build on the vision A$AP first revealed to the world on his 2011 mixtape. Seeing a young hip hop star take a great idea and make it an even better idea is what it's all about. It's not a 10/10 album, but it's an exciting one."
