30 Autumn Albums To Get Seriously Excited About

  • The festival season is over, and with it goes the summer. Don’t resign yourself over to the bleak months yet though, there’s a whole bunch of new and exciting releases coming your way. On September 9, Arctic Monkeys return with their 5th studio album ‘AM’. Finished two weeks before they stormed Glasonbury, singer Alex Turner admitted earlier in the year that “it sounds a bit like Dr Dre”.

  • Janelle Monae – ‘The Electric Lady’ – 10th September Janelle Monae’s follow up to her debut album features a collection of star-studded collaborations, including Prince, Erykah Badu and Solange. Miguel also appears on new single ‘Primetime’, which interpolates Pixies’ classic track ‘Where Is My Mind’.

  • Drake – ‘Nothing Was The Same’ – 24th September The artwork for Drake’s third album runs over two separate covers featuring Drake as a child and a man. The album comes out a week later than previously scheduled, and features appearances from Jay Z and Lil Wayne.

  • MGMT – ‘MGMT’ – 17th September MGMT showcased single ‘Your Life Is A Lie’ on The Late Show With David Letterman in August. The band have described their self-titled third album as “less distraught, nervous and paranoid” than their last album ‘Congratulations’.

  • Manic Street Preachers – ‘Rewind The Film’ – 16th September The band’s 11th album is largely acoustic and features collaborations with Lucy Rose, Cate Le Bon and Richard Hawley. Single ‘Show Me The Wonder’ is released on September 9.

  • San Fermin – ‘San Fermin’ – 17th September US/11th Nov UK American artist San Fermin (aka Ellis Ludwig-Leone)’s website describes his debut album as a ‘sweeping, full bodied listen with multiple distinct peaks and ambitious thematic connections’. Singles ‘Sonsick’ and ‘Daedalus’ suggest very good things await.

  • Nine Inch Nails – ‘Hesitation Marks’ – 3rd September Nine Inch Nails’ follow up to ‘The Slip’ features bassist Pino Palladino, who is a regular with The Who, and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Frontman Trent Reznor told NME that he feels the record documents his process of recovery after his struggle with depression.

  • Babyshambles –‘Sequel To The Prequel’ – 2nd September Pete Doherty’s latest offering comes six years after their last album, ‘Shotters Nation’. Doherty told NME, “I don’t want this to be half arsed, I want to get up there and really fucking smash it out. Babyshambles aren’t back – this band has always been here”.

  • Justin Timberlake – ‘The 20/20 Experience 2 Of 2’ – 30th September The second half of March’s ‘The 20/20 Experience’ includes the already released ‘Take Back The Night’. The singer recently reunited with his N*Sync bandmates during his MTV VMA performance.

  • Chrvches – ‘The Bones Of What You Believe’ – 23rd September The Scottish group’s debut album will be released as a 12-track standard edition and an 18-track deluxe edition. Their singles so far – ‘Lies, ‘The Mother We Share’, ‘Recover’ and ‘Gun’ – are all included in the tracklisting.
