Warpaint formed in Los Angeles in 2004 on Valentine’s Day. The original line-up featured the Hollywood actress Shannyn Sossamon, who starred alongside Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale.
The band’s interest in tarot cards, astrology and general spiritual stuff has seen them labelled as hippies – though Theresa is quick to point out that they “don’t have dreads and smell.”
Warpaint’s atmospheric, understated sound has drawn comparisons with The xx, with whom they toured in the US. The two bands hit it off, and ended up doing karaoke after a show in Montana. Romy from The xx did ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac, apparently.
Indeed, there’s a Stevie Nicks-esque witchiness about Warpaint. According to Emily: “I’d like to be a witch when I get older. That’s basically the retirement plan.”
