La Roux picked up a nomination for Best British Single at the BRIT Awards launch last night (January 18), on the strength of her track ‘In For The Kill’. Also nominated in the same category are Joe McElderry, Cheryl Cole and Taio Cruz – all the greats, then. Pic: PA Photos
Pixie Lott picked up three nominations – Best British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, and British Single (for ‘Mama Do’). Pic: PA Photos
Ellie Goulding performed at the launch. She’s the only artist to have already won a BRIT Award for 2010 – she picked up the Critics’ Choice award, which means industry ‘experts’ think you’ll be buying her records.

Florence And The Machine caps off an excellent year with a nomination for British Female Solo Artist. She’s up against Bat For Lashes, Leona Lewis, Lily Allen and Pixie Lott. Pic: Dan Dennison
St Albans indie dance trio – and precursors to Delphic – Friendly Fires will be fighting it out with Florence (again), La Roux, Pixie Lott and JLS for British Breakthrough Act.

International Male Solo Artist is another genre smorgasbord. In the blues-playin’ hobo corner you have Seasick Steve, while Michael Bublé represents the middle-aged female contingent, Jay-Z and Eminem bring the hip-hop and Bruce Springsteen rounds it off. Pic: PA Photos
International Female Solo Artist will be fiercely fought this year. Rihanna is in with a good chance, but then her competition isn’t too shoddy either; Shakira, Ladyhawke, Lady Gaga and Norah Jones make up the other nominees.
Despite having an eight-album discography that stretches back to the year 2000, Animal Collective have been nominated for International Breakthrough Act. Daniel Merriweather, Empire Of The Sun, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are also in with a shot.
International Album features five massive LPs from the last year. Lady Gaga’s ubiquitous ‘The Fame’ might well triumph, although she faces competition from Animal Collective’s ‘Merriweather Post Pavillion’, Black Eyed Peas’ ‘The E.N.D.’. Kasabian’s ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ is up for British Album, as are Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Tongue ‘N’ Cheek’, Lily Allen’s ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’ and Paolo Nutini’s ‘Sunny Side Up’. Florence’s third nomination is in this category, for ‘Lungs’. Pic: Andrew WHitton
Lily Allen’s nominated in the Best British Single category, alongside such ‘classics’ as Alesha Dixon’s ‘Breathe Slow’, Joe McElderry’s ‘The Climb’, and Taio Cruz’s ‘Break Your Heart’. Pic: Tim Cochrane
