The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2011 took place last night (Aug 28) at LA’s Nokia Theater, featuring performances from Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Kanye West & Jay-Z and several tributes to Amy Winehouse. Beyonce used the occasion to reveal her new baby bump and the fact she’s pregnant.
Odd Future cancelled their set at Leeds festival to dash back to LA for the awards. While Tyler, The Creator was nominated for Video Of The Year (for ‘Yonkers’) he lost out to Katy Perry. However, he did win Artist Of The Year. And a prize for that shirt too, hopefully.
Jessie J wasn’t nominated, but she showed up anyway with a plaster cast and fancy crutches. Adele and Katy Perry were big winners on a night that also saw victories for Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.
Bruno Mars played a heartfelt tribute to Amy Winehouse at the MTV VMAs. He wasn’t the only one – Tony Bennett honoured her memory and played a video of the pair singing together back in March this year.
Adele shows up to the VMAs. She performed ‘Someone Like You’ and picked up the awards for Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography (for ‘Rolling In The Deep’).
Russell Brand paid a heartfelt tribute to Amy Winehouse. “She was a mate of mine and tragically this year we lost her,” he told the crowd. “”First time I met her, she was kind of like a daft, dopey person, just wandering around a little bit crazy, like a lot of people who are drawn to big cities with a peculiar, unknowable talent.”
Katy Perry won Video Of The Year (for ‘Firework’), Best Collaboration (with Kanye for ‘E.T.’) and Best Special Effects (also for ‘E.T.’).
Jay-Z and Kanye West put their diamonds in the air during a performance of ‘Otis’ from their new album ‘Watch The Throne’. The pair jostled each other with smiles on their faces when Beyonce announced from the stage she was pregnant.
Britney Spears won Best Pop Video for ‘Till The World Ends’ and also picked up the Michael Jackosn Video Vanguard Award, from Lady Gaga who was dressed as alter ego Jo Calderone.
Nicki Minaj won Best Hip Hop video for ‘Super Bass’ and the Single Child Syndrome Award for that look-at-me ensemble.
Tony Bennett paid tribute to Amy Winehouse and introduced a clip of the pair singing in March 2011.
Nicki Minaj, who’d been pulled backwards through Toys R Us on her way to the show, picks up her award for ‘Super Bass’.
Pitbull and Ne-Yo performed their ubiquitous track ‘Give Me Everything’.
Lady Gaga spent the entire night as her male alter ego, to the annoyance of many commentators.
Gaga – as Jo Calderone – told Britney she/he used to put pictures of her on her wall and “touch myself”, much to the embarrassment of Britney.
Brian May joined Lady Gaga – aka Jo Calderone – onstage for the opening track, a run through of ‘You And I’.
