‘Darkness Visible: Photographs of Bruce Springsteen, 1975 – 1978’ is a collection of work by photographer Eric Meola from the ‘Born To Run’ and ‘Darkness On The Edge of Town’ sessions. This picture, entitled ‘Take ‘Em As They Come’, is one of two studio portraits taken in 1977/78, deliberately blurred by Eric and shot on film with a visible grain.
Many of the session photographs have never been exhibited, or offered for sale. Now they are being shown at Snap Galleries in London until September 4. This one, featuring Bruce with E Street Band saxophone player Clarence Clemons, is called ‘Scooter And The Big Man’.
Eric Meola says of this photo: “Sometime in the middle of 1977, I became aware that a new album was being recorded, and I heard a few lyrics from it, including a song called ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town.’ During that summer and into the fall, Bruce was holed up at the Navarro Hotel on Central Park South.” This piece is called ‘Restless Nights’.
The photographer added: “I had been lucky with the cover shot for ‘Born To Run’. Lucky in terms of being at the right place at the right time. Yes, I had nailed it, but now there was a new album, and the sense that Bruce had to prove it again was palpable.” This is ‘Gypsy Biker’.
This picture, titled ‘Rattlesnake Speedway’ by Meola, captures the sparse, ominous mood Springsteen would later summon on albums such as ‘Nebraska’ and ‘The Ghost Of Tom Joad’.
‘My Father’s House’ – also the name of a song on ‘Nebraska’ – shows showing Bruce outside an ivy clad church.
‘Glory Days’. Eric Meola told the Snap Galleries director Guy White: “All in all, I think this is the best set of prints I’ve ever done, and I’ll be very interested in seeing how some of them do.”
The exhibition brings together a number of previously unreleased images that Eric Meola created for Bruce Springsteen’s 1978 album ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’, alongside photographs from Eric’s 1975 ‘Born To Run’ shoot and other sessions with Bruce Springsteen. This piece is called ‘East Of Eden’.
‘Candy’s Room’. A new version of ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’, complete with unreleased material, is due out later this year, accompanied by a feature-length documentary film.
