To pay tribute to William Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death – he popped his ye olde clogs back in 1616 – a bunch of grime stars have got together for the Shakespeare reCITED project. They’ve been asked to ‘rethink’ the Bard’s poetry and plays and reinvent his work using their own stories and experience. Novelist, Little Simz and Krept & Konan have all got involved, and – to make the whole thing that much more lolz – they’ve each teamed up with an up-and-coming fashion designer to create a range of tour merchandise. Each of the limited edition pieces will be available at Selfridges, and the London store will also be hosting performances from each artist in The reFASHIONed Theatre on site throughout the summer, staring with a launch event on July 7.
The first drop of ReCITED comes courtesy of Liam Hodges X James Massiah X DJ Maximum BBK X Preditah. Here’s Birmingham grime producer Preditah looking all excited about it.
The Liam Hodges x James Massiah x Maximum BBK x Preditah Printed Long Sleeve Top is £80 and will be available from July 7.
Spoken word artist James Massiah will perform three individual poems at the launch event, over breaks from DJs Maximum and Preditah. Here he is in the Places + Faces curated fanzine which will be available at all of the reCITED events.
And here’s the top from the front, designed by Kent’s own Liam Hodges. Proceeds will go to Bettering Education, a national charity that supports young people.
Life’s A Beach x Rejjie Snow launches July 20. The Dublin rapper will appear at Selfridges alongside DJ Skinny Macho (Boiler Room) and there’ll be live graffitti art from Rejjie throughout the evening too.
The Life’s a Beach x Rejjie Snow Hoody costs £50, but there are six pieces in their collaborative range. Extreme sportswear brand Life’s a Beach was founded in the late 1980s, but is currently helmed by designer Jake Church. The charity benefiting is Ballybough Community Centre in Ireland.
Novelist’s line launches on August 11 with an event at Selfridges. The MC is working with Rhys Dawney and Gareth Emmett of East London brand New Future London on his seven-piece ‘merch’ line.
The proceeds of this collaboration go directly to Marsha Phoenix, a Supported Housing project in south London for young women aged 16-25, where Novelist’s mum once went and now works.
The seven piece collection is made up of accessories, T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. Prices start at £30 for a cap to £85 for sweatpants.
On September 17 Little Simz will close the ReCITED event, with a performance that will dovetail into London Fashion Week.
The Caitlin Price x Little Simz line sees the Islington rapper teaming up with south London luxe sportswear designer Price. This hoodie is £140.
The six piece collection is inspired by Caitlin’s own recent collection as well as Lil Simz’ tomboy vibes. You’ll have to dig a little deeper into your pockets for this one though – prices start at £100 for a printed T-shirt to £465 for a satin bomber jacket.
