Hendrix, Cream, The Hollies – The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience

Proud Camden is hosting the ‘Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience’, which takes a look at some of his most iconic photographs. The exhibit featured the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Eric Clapton, Cream and The Hollies. The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience is running from 6th December 2012 – 3rd February 2013. Ferris studied at Hastings College of Art, focusing on the Pre-Raphaelite style of painting which later influenced his psychedelic photography of the late 1960s.

After serving two years with the Royal Air Force as an aerial photographer, Ferris becamea fashion photographer for the likes of 19, Petticoat, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, French Mode and Marie Claire.

Ferris first started experimenting with colour and different types of lenses after Jimi Hendrix invited him to shoot a US version of his album ‘Are You Experienced’. Ferris used a giant Nikon fisheye lens and a secret infrared film that had just been released by the military. The Jimi Hendrix Experience used this image for the cover of ‘Are You Experienced’.

Kodak London, who provided him with the film, were so impressed by his shots that they gave him his first ever exhibit in their London gallery.

Next year, a book (The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience) of his psychedelic photographs will be published along with a glamour photo book Ibiza Dreams.

The Hollies’ ‘Evolution’ album cover was taken by Ferris in 1967.
