Instagram Turns Five: Take A Look Back At These Music Megastars' First Ever Posts

This week Instagram turns five, and to celebrate the app that makes all our drunken escapades look that much more palatable to the sober eye, here's a pre-emptive #tbt to some of the world's biggest music celebs' first forays into the world of Insta. Valencia or Hefe? Now that is the question.

  • Taylor Swift: Tay Tay's got nearly 50 million followers on Instagram now, but before her feed was chock-full of photos of her #squad she used the photo app to shine a light on family rather than friends. Swift's first photo was a filter-heavy old pic of her grandma – the exact kind of nostalgia that Instagram was made for.

  • Rihanna: If there's one celeb who knows how to play Instagram, it's Badgalriri. From half-naked shots to some rather dubious looking cigarettes, Rihanna gives a window into her life while simultaneously giving zero shits about normal pop star protocol. Her first post – a painting of Bob Marley – might have started off tame, but the caption did still call all the public "assholes".

  • Beyonce: Beyoncé was a little late to the Insta-game, only posting her first pic three years ago, but she certainly started off strong. Wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan 'Texans for Obama', the singer used her pop pedestal to try and swing the Republican state in favour of Barack in the 2012 presidential election. All hail queen Bey.

  • Drake: @champagnepapi's got some serious Instagram swag, posting a host of arty live shots mixed in with fan art, jokey memes and the odd topless selfie. Even from day one, four years ago, Drizzy started his account by posting a pic of him chilling by his private plane.

  • Lady Gaga: Though the pop chameleon had already started shedding some of her layers to show a more personal side by 2012, her first Instagram pic – a bare-faced, natural pic of herself – still felt like a window into a different kind of Gaga.

  • Eminem: Oh Marshall, didn't your mother ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all? Proving that Eminem doesn't even need words to express his disdain, his first Instagram foray was just a pic of him giving the world middle finger (twice). Lovely.

  • Wiz Khalifa: Proving that deep down, famous people are just like us, however, Wiz Khalifa's first post is endearingly shit. Joining in the early days of Instagram, the rapper's inaugural image is a enthusiastically blurry photo from a gig with a crap Nashville filter (the tackiest of all the filters) to make it look more #vintage and #real. Aw.

  • Lil' Wayne: Weezy's only recently given in to Instagram, but he's already proving a dab hand at product placement. Substituting his go-to beverage of purple drank for a slightly more wholesome can of Red Bull, his first post looks more like an ad than a pic from his personal collection.

  • Katy Perry: Savvy pop businesswoman Katy Perry, meanwhile, opened her Instagram account with a teaser from her forthcoming Vogue cover. Thankfully, K-Pez has loosened up since then and now posts all manner of amusing and arty shots from her travels (alongside a hefty whack of brand promotion).

  • Justin Timberlake: "Take a good look, only time you'll see no traffic on the 101. Headed to Staples," posted ol' Trousersnake back in 2013. You imagine the singer is probably referencing the mammoth LA venue rather than the stationery shop, but still – it's a cheery thought, isn't it?
