Jake Bugg performed on the Main Stage at Reading Festival for the first time tonight, drawing a huge crowd in one of his biggest festival shows to date. Not that the 20-year-old appeared daunted striding on stage in his early evening slot.
He made his first appearance at Reading in 2012, performing on the Festival Republic stage, two months before his self-titled debut was released.
He recently told NME that he “hated festivals”, but something about the smile on his face during his Reading set tells us he’s changing his mind.
He performed ‘Broken’ accompanying himself on the guitar, and seemed slightly overwhelmed by the crowd reaction. “Thanks very much, that was amazing,” he said. “That’s made my night, that has.”
Jake performed a surprise secret set on the BBC Introducing stage on Saturday afternoon. Unsurprisingly, the tent was packed.
Jake’s Reading set consisted of an almost even split of songs from his debut album and 2013’s follow-up ‘Shangri La’. There were no new songs, although he recently said he was working on his third album.
Jake first picked up the guitar when he was 12, although it wasn’t until he saw Don McLean guest star in an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ and heard the song ‘Vincent’ that he started taking it seriously.
Jake’s success isn’t confined to Europe. He played Coachella festival in the US in 2013, Bonaroo earlier this year and Lollapalooza in 2013. An October UK tour awaits next. See you down the front…
