Lady Gaga has announced an extension to the UK leg of her UK artRave tour this Autumn. The tour, which started in the US recently, is totally bonkers. Start at the merch stand on your way in – where with a T-shirt you’ve got the option to buy a Gaga LED wig or a sea-shell bra. Those less dedicated can always purchase a coffee cup with ‘LADY FUCKING GAGA’ written on it.
One of the residing images of SXSW this year was Gaga riding on a motorbike with a woman who just moments before had vomited all over the stage in a performance art spectacle unlike anything else. It remains to be seen whether Millie Brown will make an appearance during this tour, but if there is anywhere her unique skills make sense, then surely it is in front of thousands of art ravers.
On this tour fans can wander around underneath the translucent runway that takes her from the main stage out into the arena and there is even a bar in the stage which fans can get drinks from during the performance. Tweeting fans about the design Gaga recently said: “I really believe in it. How much fun you are all having with each other. It’s my favourite thing watching you.”
Any standard arena pop tour includes the option for fans to fork out extra to “meet and greet” their heroes. Gaga, however, likes to mix it up a little and pluck fans at random to come hang out backstage. As she explains, “I pick a few people every night out of the audience that are not VIP! I have no rules! We’re inspired by authentic raver gear, inflatable clothes + erect outfits.”
Neon daubed cyberpunkharajuku girl, a Jeff Koons gazing ball with wings and an inflatable pink and blue octopus are just some of the typically wild looks Lady Gaga has pieced together for the show each night. Don’t worry that all those costume changes might eat into the stage time though, no, Gaga has considered that and gets changed on stage.
It is not just Lady Gaga who is part of the tour. South Korean girl group Crayon Pop are on board for a majority of dates while long term Gaga collaborator Lady Starlight is also playing warm-up DJ sets most nights. There is Hatsune Miku too, Miku is a humanoid persona voiced by a singing synthesizer application depicting a 16 year old girl with turqoise pigtails.
‘Marijuana Confetti’. No, not the name of another support act but what you will find falling from the roof as Gaga performs weed anthem ‘Mary Jane Holland.’
While not confirmed for any dates in particular, it would be a surprise if Gaga fans don’t get a glimpse of R Kelly during the tour. His performances of ‘Do What U Want’ with Gaga in 2013 bordered on the legendary and included the pair dressing as the US President and his secretary and another where they dry humped on stage. Only R Kelly understands WTF? moments like Lady Gaga.
The set is not just home to smash hit singles, though. In fact, for a glitzy arena tour Gaga is taking a number of interesting risks in the running order. Take for example, ‘Partynauseous’, a song recorded for Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Good Kid, Mad City’ album, which failed to make the final cut. ‘Ratchet’, another unheard song, is also included with both songs rumoured to feature on Gaga’s next album.
Finally, the set is completely hits-packed! ‘Just Dance’, ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Poker Face’ while ‘Born This Way’ are all there.
