Lorde, Jay Z, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus: Biggest Moments From MTV VMAs 2014

The MTV Video Music Awards took place in California on Sunday night (25 August). It's usually an incident packed evening. Last year was notable for Miley Cyrus' famous 'twerking' episode. This year featured performances from Brit breakthrough act Sam Smith, Taylor Swift and an achievement award for Beyonce.

  • The MTV VMAs. One of the biggest - and usually one of the most eventful - nights in the the music calendar. This year's show took place in California on Sunday August 25. After stealing the show in 2013 with her famous 'twerking' performance, Miley Cyrus was back this year, starting the night by hitting the red carpet with Snoop (and his huge bodyguard on the left).

  • Heading into the night the big nominees were Beyonce (up for 8 awards), Eminem, Iggy Azalea and Pharrell. Charlie XCX, who's recent collaboration with Iggy on 'Fancy' earned the pair a big US hit, opened the evening by performing on the red carpet.

  • Lorde collected the MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video, becoming the first female artist ever to win in the category. The 17-year-old scooped the gong for 'Royals', beating Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Linkin Park and Imagine Dragons in the process.

  • Miley Cyrus picked up the big Astronaut of the night (best video) for 'Wrecking Ball'. Rather than taking to the stage herself, however, Cyrus instead asked homeless youth Jesse to accept the award on her behalf. Having received the gong from talk show host Jimmy Fallon, Jesse gave an emotional speech about youth homelessness in the US as a teary Cyrus watched on.

  • Beyonce wrapped the whole night up. She was there to pick up the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. She was joined on stage by husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy. Beyonce cried saying: "I am filled with so much gratitude".
