Here's a shot of the band back in 2004, taken at an NME photo shoot. During that year, they released their second album 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge', which went platinum in just over one year. Here's our track by track guide to the new album.

Another image of frontman Gerard Way back in 2004, back when he was still drinking. Back then, unkind souls dubbed him "emo Meat Loaf".

A shot from 2005, the same year MCR opened for Green Day on their 'American Idiot' tour, as well as co-headlined the Warped Tour with Fall Out Boy. Check out the video to their recent single, 'Na Na Na'.

Another NME shoot from 2005, featuring MCR dressed up as characters from cult 70s film The Warriors. That film, about warring gangs in New York, ended up influencing the songwriting on 'Danger Days...', which has a loose theme involving outlaws on the run in the desert.

More MCR video - behind the scenes on the 'Na Na Na' video shoot. This picture was taken in 2005, around the time of the band's collaboration with The Used. The two bands covered Queen's 'Under Pressure', which was released digitally as a benefit single.

My Chemical Romance in 2005. They used to be known as goth-punks, and once described themselves as being "obsessed with death". For their new album they've turned their backs on all that, telling NME: "We wanted to live in colour".

Another 2007 live shot. Around this time My Chemical Romance were part of a media witch-hunt: the Daily Mail had decided the band were part of a sinister "suicide cult".

A shot of MCR from a 2007 NME photo shoot. That was the year Gerard Way got engaged to Lyn-Z (of the band Mindless Self-Indulgence). The couple have since had a daughter, Bandit Lee.

This photo is from 2008, a year that also saw MCR fans protest outside the Daily Mail offices for "scape-goating bands" in emo coverage. Fans filled the street with banners with slogans like "I'm Not Afraid To Keep On Living" and "We're Not A Cult, We're An Army – The MCRMY" and sung a selection of My Chemical Romance songs.
