Open’er Festival 2013: Live Gallery

Poland’s Open’er Festival (3-6 July) kicked off on Wednesday in the seaport of Gdynia with a line-up that represents the best in alternative music from Alt-J (pictured here) to Savages. Here are some great shots from the four-day shindig.

Alt-J’s Gwil Sainsbury spots a tasty bit of his guitar, considers doing the full Hendrix.

Just an ordinary, pleasantly lit crowd shot until your realise no one’s holding a cameraphone aloft. Even in their absence, Yeah Yeah Yeahs have scared audiences silly.

It really did. And – wait up – we have the pictures to prove it.

5

Harbinger of a new Blur direction. Damon Albarn unveils his ‘rave shapes’.

6

Graham Coxon displayed his usual enthusiasm for taking the mic.

WARNING: Don’t examine this shot too closely or you’ll spot Alex James’s knees. Once seen, can’t be unseen.

“Yeah! We really really really have played Poland!”

9

The fightback begins. There are at least two cameraphones in this shot.

10

Blur hit the Open’er crowd with the swift one-two of ‘Girls And Boys’ and ‘Popscene’.

11

After a hit-soaked set and encores, they finished with a cleansing blast of ‘Song 2’.

Blur’s set on the Open’er Stage was followed by a turn from Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar.

13

Glastonbury punters bring Wolverhampton Wanderers flags, Open’er festivalgoers bring towers of multicoloured prisms from hostile alien worlds.

14

Kendrick Lamar closed the first day on the Open’er Stage, dishing up ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ favourites plus A$AP Rocky and Young Jeezy covers.

15

That’s never going to get down the street.

16

Somewhere, in there, is Crystal Castles’ Alice Glass.

17

Well, someone’s had an accident.

18

Oh alright, the tower of alien prisms was there already. Giving off vibes.

19

On Thursday night, Arctic Monkeys played the Open’er Stage, delivering the same set they headlined Glastonbury the week before – and Alex Turner even rolled out the same cabaret accent. It’s the new thing.

20

No freaky routine with a girl in a white dress for ‘Stagger Lee’ though.

21

Tame Impala propped up Arctic Monkeys on the Thursday, playing as the sun went down.

22

Kevin Parker was ecstatic about it too.

Disclosure playing the Tent Stage on Friday. Honest.

24

You’re blocking the path.

25

Earlier in the day, Palma Violet jolted the Alterklub Stage into life.

26

A raucous Palma Violets set saw Chili Jesson and Will Doyle indulge in a spot of crowdsurfing and pogoing around the stage.

27

Well, that’s unorthodox.

28

Queens Of The Stone Age brought ‘…Like Clockwork’ to the Gdynia masses, playing second-top on Friday night.

29

The Tent Stage was enraptured by These New Puritans’ quasi-classical, neo-ambient suite.

30

Chances are, that tattoo’s going to come off in the wash.

The Followills kept new stuff to a minimum though, only playing ‘It Don’t Matter’ from forthcoming sixth album ‘Mechanical Bull’.

33

Mount Kimbie beamed in to the Tent Stage on Saturday night with some jazzy dubstep vibes.

34

New R&B/soul star Miguel further enhanced his reputation, playing a set witnessed by Rihanna.

35

Manchester’s leading exponents of angular, complicated electropop, Everything Everything have a quick conference in the middle of the Open’er Stage.

36

“Courtney Love” was billed to appear on Theatre Stage II, but it turned out to be a surreal play featuring characters representing Love, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and Axl Rose. Thank the Polski Theatre for that one.
