Mark Linkous, the acclaimed singer-songwriter better known as Sparklehorse, committed suicide on Saturday (6 March), at the age of 47.

According to the New York Times, Linkous was found dead by police outside a friend's home, having shot himself in the heart.

Linkous' many high-profile fans include Thom Yorke, who invited Sparklehorse to support Radiohead on their 'OK Computer' tour - the two bands also collaborated on a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' in 1998.

Linkous' last recorded work was 'Dark Night Of The Soul', a collaboration with Danger Mouse (far left) and film director David Lynch (second right). The album will be released in summer 2010.

Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood led the tributes. Writing on the band's official site, he said: "I was very sad to hear the news that Mark Linkous has died. He and his band toured with us in Europe, at the start of 'OK Computer', and they were great every night."

Greenwood continued: "His first two records were very important to me, and I carried his music from the tour into my life, and my friends' lives too. He was softly spoken, with an old south courtesy I hadn’t heard before."

Greenwood's tribute concluded: "[Linkous] introduced me to Daniel Johnston's music, and the West Virginian writing of Pinckney Benedict. Mark wrote and played some beautiful music, and we're lucky to have it. Rest in peace."

Linkous released the first Sparklehorse album, ‘Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot’, in 1995, going on to release three further albums under the name including the acclaimed 2001 full-length 'It's A Wonderful Life'.

In 1996 he suffered a drug overdose in London during a European tour. He was wheelchair-bound for six months following the incident.
