Queen Latifah, who hit the headlines at last week's Grammy Awards when she married 34 straight and same-sex couples at the climax of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' 'Same Love', was handed another honour last night: she performed 'America The Beautiful' at the MetLife stadium in her hometown of New Jersey. was on hand to treat the crowd to a rendition of 'America The Beautiful'.

Mars – who didn't quite match the controversy garnered by MIA and her middle-finger salute in 2012, an act which upstaged Madonna and also saw her on the receiving end of a lawsuit from the NFL – performed tracks from his back catalogue including Locked Out of Heaven' and 'Treasure'.

Mars brought his half-time show to a close with a tribute to the troops, performing his smash hit single 'Just The Way You Are' while video images of US servicemen and women were beamed into the MetLife Stadium.

Mars' Super Bowl half-time show was also a warm-up of sorts for the singer: he'll be one of the headliners of this year's Wireless Festival in London, which will be his only festival live UK appearance of 2014. Kanye West and Drake are also set to perform.

And now for some special guests! Bruno Mars introduced Red Hot Chili Peppers to spice up his act, as the singer and the veteran band joined forces for a rendition of their 1991 single 'Give It Away'.

The Chili Peppers – who, you might have noticed, seemed to snub the offer of wearing Mars' gold lame jackets – were only onstage for the one song, but lots of viewers thought that they stole the show.

The band, who will also headline this year's Isle Of Wight Festival, were rumoured to be planning a cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Dazed And Confused' at the Super Bowl half-time show. Alas, it wasn't to be – but classic rock fans were given a little something regardless, when U2 premiered their new single 'Invisible' during the event.
