Ian Tilton began his career in the 80s capturing the Stone Roses. The Stone Roses announced in October 2011 that they were reforming for a world tour in 2012. The news was mammoth, with two of their shows in Manchester, Heaton Park selling out within 14 minutes. Ian Tilton and The Stone Roses lived in the same area of Manchester, playing a huge part in the Madchester movement. Tilton said “We bonded on our first shoot together as none of us wanted to create something boring. We held a mutual appreciation of creating something conceptually different.” Here they are filming at Granada TV studios, Manchester in January 1989.
On Wednesday, 23rd May 2012 The Stone Roses surprised everyone with a short-notice comeback show in Warrington Parr Hall. The first show they’ve played in 16 years. Liam Gallagher reviewed the show by telling NME that it was “better than sex”. The boys at Blackpool Empress Ballroom, 12th August 1989.
Ian Tilton will host a seminar on June 2nd, where stories will be shared with a Q&A session held afterwards. Tickets for this event are available for £15 from the Rock City Art online store or directly from the gallery and are strictly limited to 25 people. The crowd at Spike Island.

Journalist John Robb said that “One feature of the band’s career had been their ability to stay on the news pages of the rock press almost permanently for years on end, including the years when they did fuck all. The Stone Roses’ next show will be on 8th June 2012, at Club Razzmatazz, Barcelona. Whilst their Heaton Park shows on 29th, 30th June and 1st July 2012 will be supported by the likes of Primal Scream, Beady Eye and The Wailers. Chris Coghill, writer of the ‘Spike Island’ Stone Roses’ film which is due for release later this year, recently said that The Stone Roses ‘have at least three or four new tracks recorded’ and also that ‘The timing of the reunion couldn’t be better’ as they are about to produce the film. Here’s the first photo session Ian Tilton took of the band with Mani, he joined the band two days earlier, 29th March 1988. Brown said “When Mani joined it almost changed overnight. It became a totally different groove … Straight away, everything just fell into place”.
Brown told the NME in December 1989, “We’re the most important group in the world, because we’ve got the best songs and we haven’t even begun to show our potential yet”. After Heaton Park, The Stone Roses will tour from June to August 2012 playing, Phoenix Park, Dublin 5th July 2012, Benicassim Festival, Spain 14th July 2012 and Fuji Rock Festival, Japan 27th July 2012 before finishing at the Vital Festival, Belfast August 22nd 2012.
