First record bought
"The honest answer to this is very uncool. The first record I ever bought was by Black Lace (not the theme from 'Rita Sue and Bob Too'), it was called 'Party Party!' Featuring the greats: 'Agadoo', 'Superman', 'The Hokey Cokey' - all the hits a four-year old could ever want…... I used to get asked to bring it with me to all the kids parties I went to when I was little."
Favorite ever album
"I hate picking ‘favorites’ but if pushed I’d have to say ‘The Bends’ by Radiohead. I was talking to someone about it the other day and it seems extreme but I honestly can’t imagine who I would be today if that album had never been made."
First gig
"I think the first gig I ever went to was Supergrass. I saw them in London when I was 15 or 16. Can’t remember where it was exactly but I do remember The Divine Comedy were on too."
Best gig
"I don’t have one ‘best gig’ as it were but the musical experience that probably changed my life the most was the first time I went to Pacha in Ibiza. I’d been clubbing for years but never in a place like Pacha, it’s just the best club in the world. It was an Underwater Records night, Darren Emerson was playing and I just remember feeling ‘There is nothing better in life than where I am right now.'"
First festival
"It was Reading '98, just done my A-levels and let off the parental leash. I didn’t really do a lot of band watching though. My only real memories of it are snogging a boy under a tree and having an evil hangover the next day."
Best ever festival
"There are those that are great to work at and those that are great to just have fun at. Somewhere like Glasto for example I love if I’m there for a purpose, but as a ‘punter’ it really swamps me. To just go and have fun, be with your mates and discover new music my favorite festival is probably SGP – you always bump into people you know, it’s chaotic fun, stuff goes on fire, it’s in a beautiful location. Definitely a festival where no work should be done!"
Favorite ever band
"There really are too many favorites on my list but if I had to go with just one band it’d have to be Pulp. Aside from my unrequited Jarvis-love I think their songs are great lyrically and musically. And they have a fantastic history – all those years trying to make it and then the craziness of success when it finally came. I could go on for hours about Pulp, that’s probably why they’re my favorites."
The band that should have achieved more
"There’s loads of bands that I can think of that could always have achieved more if it weren’t for some really sad reason. And there’s a few I can think of that have gone off the boil but they could always bring it back in the future so I won’t name them now. I always wish the KLF hadn’t jacked it in and destroyed their back catalogue, that they’d just done a little bit more - but I suppose quitting when and how they did is as much part of them as the tunes."
