The Afternoons
A Change In Season (Saturday Records)
So Belle &
Sebastian it hurts. Yet as some weathered minstrel from America's heartland
once posited, it hurts so good. This is a black-and-white weepy film of a song,
all cinematic wistfulness and broad gestures of longing. It is, in fact, so
saturated with classic, unshirkable sadness, it gives you chills. Honestly. A
tricky thing to pull off without sounding petulant, copyist or otherwise icky.
Oh, and it also has what must be a record-breaking number of references to
various meteorological conditions, times of day and turns of year. The
Afternoons are a six-piece from Tenby and Cardiff. This is their second
single. The outlook for autumn looks decidedly positive.
