A Perfect Circle
Judith(Virgin)
They are called A Perfect Circle because, hey, only the truly insane can draw one and, like, if you scratch the surface we're all a little unhinged at heart, right? Just like Seal and Queen once sang, we're never gonna survive unless we're
a crazy little thing called love. Now. Mama.
Odd, then, that Maynard James Keenan and his songwriting buddy Billy Howerdel should have chosen a deeply sensible and gratingly traditional hotch-potch of thrash, glam and old-skool metal to express their mental instability rather than, say, more familiar nutter pursuits like folk music or serial murder.
'Judith' is unreconstructed scowl-rawk which belongs in those innocent days before irony and levity and self-awareness saved metal from itself. It is thus fairly effective and will no doubt appeal to bumfluffed boys who love the romantic idea of a grisly prison riot more than the real thing. The video is directed by Seven and Fight Club creator David Fincher, which tells you all you need to know. Like, intense, dude.
