6 / 10 THE 'COMPACT' DISC. NOW THAT is a joke. If the CD has contributed anything to '90s pop, it's been merely to encourage musicians to indulge themselves. As if most of them needed any encouragement.

Take Kruder & Dorfmeister, for example, the Viennese duo whose music dances to the beat of drummer who sounds stoned. A handy selection box of their highlights would have been pleasurable enough. But why give your listeners that when you can offer them a full 150-minute, warts-and-all encyclopedia of K&D sessions? And charge them an extra few quid for it.

Does the world really need to own both their reappraisals of Bomb The Bass' 'Bug Powder Dust', even if the first one is a corker? Is it really happy to wade through 21 tracks to find the sprinkling of gems, like the lush but cheeky beat makeovers they give to Alex Reece, Roni Size and David Holmes? Well, it shouldn't be.

So, everything you ever wanted to know about the crazy remix world of Kruder & Dorfmeister. Plus quite a lot you didn't want to know, too.
