Daniel Bedingfield : Gotta Get Thru This

Beddo's pop-soul masterclass

Not, as another bedroom genius recently said, your typical garage joint. In fact, title track apart, ‘Gotta Get Thru This’ is entirely garage-free. Elsewhere, this is a debut album that thrills and surprises at almost every turn. When not singing like a lady, Daniel Bedingfield has a vocal ability of boundless soul and energy, and a songwriting talent that effortlessly crosses musical boundaries, recalling the Stereo MC’s (‘Blown It Again’), Stevie Wonder (‘Girlfriend’), The Police (‘Friday’) and, on ‘If You’re Not The One’, every chart-mauling uber-ballad you’ve ever heard.

Time will tell whether improbable popstar Beddo has wasted these songs by singing them himself (there are three or four Number Ones for Blue on here, and you suspect just the one for Daniel), but this is a mighty debut.
