Weller, Paul : Leafy Mysteries
Hardly the height of rock’n’roll excitement, but a welcome return to form...
Paul Weller has done two truly shocking things this year. First, the onetime political activist turned carnivore after years of being a vegetarian because "I was bloody hungry". Second, he abandoned turgid Dadrock to make an album with good humour, sparkle and - can it be? - a whole host of gorgeous Britpop-esque melodies. This refreshingly lightweight, almost twee slice of perfect jangle pop looks back to the likes of The La’s and sixties mod heroes Small Faces to deliver a tribute to the joys of chilling out in the countryside and counting your blessings.
Hardly the height of rock’n’roll excitement, but a welcome return to form for a man who, don’t forget, was once Britain’s greatest songwriter.
