Polyphonic Spree : Light & Day

Being British – and thus miserable and cynical - you can’t help but have a slightly ambivalent attitude to The Polyphonic Spree. You can love, ‘The Beginning Stages Of...’, but it’s not a record you’d return to on a regular basis - such unbridled optimism seems self-indulgent when you’re constantly bailing floodwaters out of your lean-to conservatory. ‘Light&Day’ then - a three-minute firework display that sounds like Brian Wilson trying to conduct an orchestra of Andrex puppies on E - is a timely reminder of the Spree’s infectious effervescence, a steamroller for such stuffy reservations. Verily, Tim DeLaughter has the gift ("reach for the sun!" he implores, without it sounding like a cornflakes ad, somehow) and it’s self-defeating to over analyse it. Embrace Polyphonic Spree, light up your life.
