Luscious buzzpop of ages...

Yo La Tengo : Today Is The Day

Several hundred years hard labour at the coalface of indie rock, and still New Jersey's Yo La Tengo have the nerve to make overstuffed EPs as good as this one. Time's tight, so let's skip over the terrific B-sides and the cover of folk legend Bert Jansch's 'Needle Of Death' (not the most positive depiction of drugs in song, that one) and focus on the girlish, amped-up lullaby of lead track, 'Today Is The Day'. Featuring a wash of fuzzy, chugging guitars, it gently flips out after about three minutes, transforming itself into a noise that should, in a just world, make The Raveonettes cry like babies. Very autumnal, too, if we're going to be seasonal about these things.
