Brand New : Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
The mid-twenties breakdown develops sex appeal...
Thought emo was the business of wispy indie bedwetters that’s just a rucksack and a few powerchords away from Longview? Well, until Long Island’s Brand New came along, you were probably right. Or rather, until they lost their minds touring their debut ‘Your Favourite Weapon’ and made, in last year’s 'Deja Entendu', one of the most addictive, profound and psychologically bothered albums since 'The Holy Bible'. You wouldn’t want to be Jesse Lacey on this evidence, but you’d definitely take his 3am phone calls. This tempts you in on a stalker-pop verse before diving headlong in the face of any potential radio play with its chorus, "Die young and save yourself!!" And if you think that’s dark, wait til you hear tour-psychosis anthem 'I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light': "I would kill to be inland but I am paid to make girls panic while I sing". Him and that Norwegian World Idol goblin both.
